I recently got introduced to the folks behind The Vintage Pop Up Cinema Co. who are debuting their pop-up cinema format in mine (and their) city of Nottingham. Good ol’ Notts is no stranger to an underground pop up cinema, with the likes of Kino Klubb, The Film Exchange and Kneel Before Zod all pushing a thriving underground cinema scene in the city – alongside our staple indie movie house The Broadway Cinema, which is regarded as one of the best cinemas in the country, if not the world.
The team who’s background is in pop-up food stalls, festivals and one-off music events we’re spurred on by their love of iconic films, vintage aesthetics and the desire to do something different. A combination of finding the perfect location, ideal timing and the Christmas season finally allowed them to bring their vision to life.
Everything i’ve seen and heard so far sounds pretty sweet. Yesterday I got invited down to see the venue and have a quick run through of the list of films they’ll be showing. Everything is still very much in progress, but the venue is shaping up nicely. It’s set over two floors in a Grade-II listed building that used to house a flagship location for a rather famous clothing brand.
Currently under construction in time for the first screening on the 14th December is their huge cinema screen (duh!) alongside, a pop up bar, gourmet food stands, a vintage sweets counter and of course a popcorn and ice cream stall.
Check out some of my photo’s below and stayed tuned to my INSTA for more. I can’t give too much away just yet, but i’ll update you as soon as I know more. I’ve got another site visit pencilled in for next week and should be getting some sneaky previews of the food and drink offerings.
